One of our main causes here at Kareem’s Collection Drive is taking care of the most vulnerable in society. Over the years many of our initiatives have seem to have children somewhere in the equation. The beneficiaries of our very first collection drive were fire victims who lost everything except for a bed base. Among the victims were 4 single mothers and 9 children. Since then many of our drives benefitted single parent homes with young children. In 2011 through his advocacy Kareem was successful in securing a US$1,750.00 for the Walkers Place of Safety in Kingston, Jamaica, a children’s home housing approximately 50 wards of the state between the ages of 2 and 18 years old. From the proceeds of our 2020 collection drive we were able to make a donation of some much needed basic food items to the Alta Vista Children’s Home in Clarendon, Jamaica. Through future endeavors we intend to raise more funds to continue benefitting the young among us.
This focus of our agenda has ballooned into arguably one of the most important with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Health and hygiene cover a broad area depending on how you classify anything related to either of the two. However, one thing we try to ensure is we cover as much as we can. Cleaning supplies, personal hygiene products including feminine hygiene items, over the counter pharmaceuticals, are just some of the items we have always tried to incorporate in our drive. More recently we have included supplies to help fight the spread of the COVID-19 virus, such as disposable and reusable masks, hand sanitizer and gloves. This area will continue to be an area of focus for the foreseeable future.
This is what we do! All our efforts at Kareem’s Collection Drive are aimed at poverty alleviation. Our three main methods of acquiring the tools to help those in need include collecting tangible donations, crowdfunding through our GoFundMe and organizing fundraiser events. All the funds we collect are used to purchase non-perishable food items, personal hygiene products, toiletries, over the counter drugs and household cleaning supplies. Our care packages aim to incorporate a wide enough range of items to help take our beneficiaries over the hump during a difficult time. In recent years our distribution has taken place at Christmas time, because let’s face it, who doesn’t like getting stuff at Christmas time. We all do.
